This week’s guest is Rhodrick Magsino, owner and main designer of Alewood Games. We talk about the Baltimore indie TTRPG scene and how filmmaking and music production influence his game design. We dig into his games: Remember Frankie (his Tom Waits-inspired storytelling/lyric writing game),Traysikel: Ride or Die! (an anti-colonizer, punk rock fantasy motorcycle adventure that takes place in a fictional Philippines), ARKYVR (where you play a documentary crew in Mothership RPG), OMENDROME (a supplement for ARKYVR with filmmaker-centered mini-adventures), The Revolution Will (a Gil Scott-Heron inspired d20 table mini-zine).
MD 403 – BeakMaster w/ Rhodrick Magsino
BeakMaster (they/them): This large bird creature has an excessive amount of beaks in their odd physiology that speak simultaneously. This hip hop bard shows up in markets and bazaars to sell you music albums in compact disc (CD) form. They have 1d6 albums for sale every time you meet. They’ll provide a CD player boombox with speakers or a personal unit with headphones with each purchase. Once you meet BeakMaster, they will always be around: at parties, on the street, in front of stores, at the bottom of dungeons, even in other dimensions. BeakMaster concerts have been world-changing events.
Rap Cacophony: By beatboxing and rapping with all their beaks, the BeakMaster may attack with a mindbending cypher of rhyme-schemes that discombobulates a weak mind. All within 20 feet who can hear must save or roll a d8. On a 1 to 4, the target does nothing. On a 5 or 6, the target does nothing but join the cypher with their own beatboxing or lyrics. On a 7 or 8, the target attacks a randomly determined creature, including themself.
D6 Payments: The payment will change each time you meet BeakMaster.
D6 Albums: Each album is an hour long. When you listen to a full album with intention, you’re imbued with its special ability for 24 hours.
