This week’s guest is Justin Nauman, president of Tabletop Gaymers, whose mission is promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion by championing the visibility and recognition of the LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, asexual, and others) community through tabletop gaming. We talk about the GAYMER and ALLY Badge Ribbons that they pass out at conventions, Gayme Night for LGBTQ+ Community Centers and The Gaming Safe Space Initiative – in association with GAMA.

MD 237 Sashays & Shields w/ Justin Nauman
This room has two thin runways, one in front of you, and one directly across from you. Below the runways is a 30-foot drop to a magnetic floor that makes escaping your armor without help impossible. The walls are lined with armor and the catwalks are lined with brightly colored shields that represent each of the dance houses, with the visage of the house mother. Once you agree to the gayme, the lights shift to strobes, a disco ball, lazer light show, and a DJ starts playing music.
You’re welcomed by the floating Bearbara Grizzelich, a drag performer dressed as a leather-daddy bear with a fake beard, massive amounts of faux chest hair, a pompadour, and black leather chaps with flowing fringe. They explain the rules and hand out a ribbon to the victor. Magic ribbons: “Sashay Queen,” 1/day fly 30 feet. “Bear Pride Flag,” 1/day briefly doubles your strength. “Drag-on King,” 1/day briefly boosts your AC.
Sashays & Shields: This ball competition consists of walking like a supermodel down the catwalk and back in full armor with a shield. Dex checks. Don’t fall. Grizzelich will judge you on dance, beauty and realness. After each walk the loser has one of their three chunks of runway drop away until one falls to their doom. Choose a house’s armor and shield before you compete. That house will cheer for you, and your ghost will join their house after you die. An opposing house’s champion ghost will haunt their respective armor and choose their shield with the longest stream of ribbons.
Dance Houses: Each wall has a viewing booth occupied by the ghosts of previous competitors who now occupy one of the four dance houses: Queen, King, Genderfuck or Camp. Ghosts who win are either allowed to go to the afterlife or gain another ribbon. They almost always take the ribbon.
